I think it’s only right that I do a spoiler free review for this book. A true spoiler free review because I think it helps to not even know the synopsis of this story.
Iain Reid really knows how to string you along for a mystery. He wrote the last book I obsessed over, I’m Thinking of Ending Things. I can really tell that Reid’s first book wasn’t some flash in the pan fluke, but he’s seriously good at writing compelling narratives without needing anything crazy actually happening in the story. Now where this book differs from his first is that while I’m Thinking of Ending Things is way more interesting after you finish the book, Foe is far more interesting before you finish the book. Which I guess is normal for mystery novels, but I was expecting to have to dissect and pore over this book after I finished and instead it handed me the conclusion.
I don’t mean to try and compare this to the first book, but I did pick it up because it was the same author. His first book was definitely one that required a second read, at minimum. But this book doesn’t need to be revisited after finishing. It can be for some added understanding, but it doesn’t add more value to the story like I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
Thrilling psychological mystery than I could not for the life of me put down. I have never read a book in three days before. Lost sleep twice just because I couldn’t stop reading. I have a feeling his third book will be the same.
