Ruby Redraw

This isn’t the way I traditionally draw my art. But I’ve been thinking for the past three months about my art. A lot of it felt soulless even though my heart was always in it. I’ve been looking at a few artists I follow wondering what I could do to make mine evoke the same feeling. It wasn’t until I found yet another artist with a fantastic but simple style that I forced myself to sit down and try to imitate them. There were three things I set out to do: (1) use a lower dynamic range and saturation, kinda like what you see in my webcomic series (2) use a fitting an interesting facial expression, because this is something I’m constantly working on (3) make the drawing simple and clean. This was one thing I noticed about the artist I recently followed. His art style was very simple, but it was incredibly well done. I wanted to mimick that.

It wasn’t until I finished drawing the pose that I realised that I had drawn someone in a very similar pose before back in 2014. It was at that point that I decided to draw the same nameless girl from back then.

I named her Ruby now for obvious reasons. But I’d say that in the past 7 years my improvement is clear. But more important than that, this drawing feels and looks so much better than the other stuff on my Instagram page right now. What I’m trying to say is this: expect more drawings like this from now on. I just might be ditching the vibrant palettes I’ve used since day one.
